Upgrading the SSD in your MacBook Pro A1708 (2016-2017) not only expands storage capacity but also boosts overall performance. This guide walks you through each step, from preparation to installation, empowering you to successfully upgrade your MacBook Pro's SSD.
Before We Begin
  1. Before installing the new Macbook Pro SSD, please upgrade your Mac to macOS 10.13 High Sierra (or 10.14 Mojave or 10.15 Catalina) or later macOS. These OS versions include an EFI firmware updates for Mac. If the original SSD was installed with the macOS 10.12 or earlier, The new SSD will not be recognized after replacement.
  2. Please back up all important data. You can use Time Machine, KingDian External SSD, or other backup solutions.
Tools and Materials Needed:
  • Pentalobe (P5) screwdriver
  • Torx (T5) screwdriver
  • Spudger or plastic pry tool
  • External hard drive for data backup (optional but recommended)
  • KingDian SSD fo MacBook Pro A1708 2016-2017(Compatible SSD or an Apple proprietary SSD)

Let’s Get Started
  1. Power Off and Unplug
Shut down your MacBook Pro and disconnect any attached peripherals.
 
  1. Remove the Bottom Case
Use the Pentalobe (P5) screwdriver to remove the ten screws holding the bottom case in place. Keep the screws organized as they are of different sizes.
Carefully pry the bottom case off using a spudger or plastic pry tool.

 
  1. Disconnect the Battery
To avoid any electrical damage, disconnect the battery connector from the logic board.
 
  1. Find and Replace the Solid State Drive
The SSD is located near the battery on the logic board. Unscrew the Torx (T5) screw holding the SSD, then gently pull the SSD out of its slot at a slight angle.
Insert the new SSD into the slot at the same angle you removed the old one. Ensure it is seated properly then secure the new SSD with the Torx (T5) screw.

Reconnect the battery connector to the logic board. Align the bottom case with the MacBook Pro and press it into place. Replace and tighten the Pentalobe (P5) screws.
Follow the on-screen instructions to install macOS on your new SSD then restore your data onto the new SSD.
